Yet, Western culture has often privileged written text in the cultivation and transmission of knowledge while overlooking other forms. However, more credibility is now being given to alternative models derived from non-Western cultures as a way to conduct research and create new forms of knowledge, which include primary sources like oral traditions, myths, and sagas. Such primary sources operate as a highly effective means of studying culture, retrieving history, and reconstructing artistic values.-The experiences of African American Visual Artists are often grounded in a cultural hybridity that reflects a melding of many influences, including African, African American, and Western cultures.

In this qualitative study involving African American Visual Art, the relationship between visual art as an alternative language and the creation of knowledge is highlighted, especially the links to story-telling and oral traditions. Specifically, the connection between different forms of knowledge and Western, African, and African American cultures is demonstrated. In addition, the limitations of creating knowledge through text and the advantages of art as a pictorial and visual language are discussed.-In this study, most of the artists expressed multiple forms of knowledge and all showed diverse cultural influences primarily through process, materials and images, and content, all of which impact the creation of a final art product for the visual artist.

To fully understand the meaning of African American visual art and its creation as a final product, it is essential to consider the thought process involved in creating the work, the choices in selecting media, and the decisions the artists made in choosing materials, images, objects and forms, and their interpretation.

Furthermore, the artists questioned the belief that such distinct disciplines as arts and crafts along with commercial art and high art could not be fused together in the creation of new forms of art.-Key Words: Art, Art & Culture, Art & Knowledge, Artistic, Artists, African American Visual Art, African American Visual Artists, Artistic Creation, Black Art, Black Studies, Ethnic & Racial Studies, Visual Art, Visual Artists
