DCI Revie and DS Jackson lead the hunt for the killer of the harmless old man. They soon learn that Thomas Yates was a long term paedophile and his grown up victims all become suspects. His two sons, Richard and Anthony have their own problems, marital and personal.

They are both unhappily married to women they have known since they were small children. They are also still trying to deal with the recent tragic death of their mother.Their neighbours and childhood friends include David Farrington, a divorced builder with an eye for the ladies who lives next door. Janet Banks, next door but one, has always loved Anthony and spends her days caring for her sick mother, hoping that one day Anthony will come to her.

Judith Buckley, who lives further up the street has recently divorced and returned to a lonely existence at her childhood home. The Prentice family, related closely to the Yates family, are rich, successful and live in North Wales. Their brother died in an apparent accident and their mother has gone too. All of these characters suffered as children at the hands of Thomas Yates, but do not appear to have any reason to seek murderous revenge forty years after the initial events. The Lamb sisters live in a large house opposite these long term residents.

Since they moved in as girls, the elderly ladies have recorded every visit, event and conversation they have been witness to in Applewyke. The investigating murder team are sure that their murderer is someone who knew Thomas Yates, but they have too many suspects. DNA tests eventually reveal some remarkable truths. As the body count mounts up it becomes clear that the attacks are planned. The police find the Lamb’s journal and work through the thousands of entries, looking for inspiration. The search narrows and on a snowy day in December, the murderer’s reign finally comes to an end at Crib Goch on Snowdon in North Wales. As the investigating team celebrates their victory, DCI Revie decides to take another look at the journal.
